How to Use a Spore Microscopy Kit: Step-by-Step Guide

If you’ve purchased one of our microscopy products, this guide will show you how to use it properly for its intended purpose. Whether you ordered a spore syringe microscopy kit or a spore print microscopy kit, the process is simple when you prepare your slide carefully and ensure a clean workspace.

At Sporeworks EU, our spore solutions and spore prints are prepared in a sterile cleanroom environment to support clear and reliable microscopy observations.

Important: Our products are intended for microscopy use only. They are not for cultivation or human consumption.

What’s Included in Each Kit?

Spore Syringe Microscopy Kit

  • sterile spore solution in a syringe
  • dispensing tip
  • alcohol wipe

Spore Print Microscopy Kit

  • spore print on aluminum foil labeled and stored in a ziploc bag

Before You Begin: Set Up a Clean Workspace

Before handling any sample, take a moment to properly prepare your workspace.

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly.
  2. Sanitize all surfaces you’ll be working on, including your microscope.
  3. Wear gloves, and sanitize them with 70% isopropyl alcohol.

A clean workspace helps reduce contamination and gives you a much better chance of getting a clean and clear sample on the slide.

Additional Items You’ll Need

  • 70% isopropyl alcohol
  • a microscope
  • a glass slide
  • a paper towel

If you’re using a spore print, you’ll also need:

  • a sterile scalpel or metal scraper
  • a drop of distilled water

How to Use a Spore Syringe Microscopy Kit

Step 1: Sanitize your hands, all work surfaces, and the outside of the plastic bag containing the kit.

Step 2: Prepare the glass slide by removing the cover slip and keeping it within easy reach.

Step 3: Remove the syringe from the plastic bag and shake it well to distribute the spores evenly throughout the solution.

Step 4: Attach the dispensing tip and carefully remove the protective cap.

Step 5: Place a single drop of solution onto the glass slide.

One drop is enough. More than that usually just makes the slide messier and harder to view.

Step 6: Apply the cover slip. If there is excess liquid around the edges, remove it gently with the corner of a paper towel.

Step 7: Place the slide under the microscope and observe it.

For best visibility, begin at a lower magnification and increase gradually until the sample is clearly in view.

How to Use a Spore Print Microscopy Kit

Step 1: Sanitize your hands, all work surfaces, and the outside of the plastic bag containing the spore print.

Step 2: Prepare the glass slide by removing the cover slip and placing a small drop of distilled water onto the slide.

Step 3: Remove the spore print from the plastic bag and carefully unfold the foil cover.

Step 4: Using the tip of a sterile scalpel or metal scraper, transfer a very small amount of spores onto the slide.

Step 5: Apply the cover slip. If there is excess moisture around the edges, remove it gently with the corner of a paper towel.

Step 6: Place the slide under the microscope and observe it.

As with the spore syringe kit, it helps to begin at a lower magnification and gradually increase until the sample is clearly visible.

Storage Instructions

  • Spore syringe: store in a refrigerator for up to 12 months
  • Spore print: store in a cool, dry place for 3 to 5 years

A Few Simple Tips for Better Microscopy Results

  • Keep your setup clean
  • Set everything out in advance
  • Use less sample, not more
  • Start with a lower view, then zoom in

Which Product Is Right for You?

  • Spore syringe – quick, ready-to-use liquid format
  • Spore print – longer storage life
